More than 450 people attended the Fifth Annual Ducks for Bucks fundraiser at Wines of the San Juan recently.
The total does not include online participants who took the total ducks sold this year to just over 1,600.
With help from the community, this year’s fundraiser totaled $22,000.
Ducks for Bucks benefits families whose children have been diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Disease. The National Institutes of Health calls Niemann-Pick Disease C “childhood Alzheimers.” Most children who suffer with the disease begin seeing neurological symptoms between the ages of 4 and 10. Once the neurological breakdown begins, the body begins to break down and the child loses all mobility. Most children with Niemann-Pick Disease die before their 20th birthday, but many die much younger.
Over the last year, the group has helped families with medication costs, handicapped remodeling of a bathroom, hospital beds, travel needs and much more.
So far this year the requests have come in for much of the same needs and the group can now begin meeting the needs of the families thanks to the generosity of the community.
This year’s event saw 200 more ducks sold than last year.
